Teen caught with 70+ packets nyaope

The young suspect was nabbed when police were patrolling in the area.

An 18-year-old was caught with more than 70 packets of nyaope near Bekkersdal last month. According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the teen was caught during a routine police patrol around the N12 in August.

Our members spotted the suspect waiting next to the Rand Water truck depot trying to hitchhike. Police discovered that the suspect had been carrying drugs after they searched him,” Lefakane said.

The suspect was arrested immediately and charged with being in possession of an illegal substance. Colonel Phumelele Matamela, the Bekkersdal Police station commander applauded the members for the bust. “Drugs are a scourge affecting our youth every day. As a result, businesses and homes are broken into, and small appliances are stolen just for thugs to make a quick buck either for their addiction or another crime.” She further appealed to the public to refrain from buying stolen goods as it amounts to a crime punishable by law.
