Man hacks aunt to death, seriously injures grandmother aged 80

‘I am infuriated because of all the killings happening during Women’s Month when the focus is on defenceless women, children and our elderly’ – Station commander.

A 28-year-old man attacked and killed his aunt and seriously injured his 80-year-old grandmother on a farm in Rietfontein on Wednesday night, 26 August.

Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson said both victims, the 53-year-old aunt and the grandmother were at home when they heard their nephew shouting and breaking the windows of the house.

He broke down the door and just went on a killing spree. He hacked his aunt and grandmother with a dangerous weapon. When his uncle arrived, the older man forced his way into the house to save the victims. He managed to overpower and disarm the nephew.

“Police and the paramedics were called. The paramedics certified the aunt dead on the scene whereas the grandmother was rushed to hospital. The suspect was also taken to hospital under police guard.”

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein Police station commander added, “I am infuriated because of all the killings happening during Women’s Month when the focus is on defenceless women, children and our elderly.”
