Man nabbed, illegal firearm recovered

Suspects are preying on unsuspecting victims who walk along open velds, targeting them for their cash and cellphones

A man was arrested for armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition in Bekkersdal.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, suspects are preying on unsuspecting victims who walk along open velds, targeting them for their cash and cellphones.

“We are concerned about the number of armed robberies in our precinct. In the most recent incident that occurred on Thursday 9 July in Simunye, a 25-year-old man fell prey to such a crime, and was robbed of a cellphone,” Lefakane said.

After the matter was reported to the police, they managed to arrest a 30-year-old suspect who was charged with armed robbery and being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

“He is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon,” Lefakane added.
