AfriForum’s Randfontein branch secures manholes

'Local authorities do not care about the safety or frustrations of the community' – AfriForum.

The AfriForum branch members in Randfontein covered six manholes with concrete blocks after numerous manhole covers had been stolen.

“The branch members have now covered nine holes in total, and numerous others will soon be secured,” said Matiam van Vuuren, chairperson of AfriForum’s Randfontein branch.

These open holes pose various safety hazards, especially for pedestrians who walk past the open holes daily, and children who play nearby. Litter ends up in the open holes which blocks the town’s sewerage system almost weekly.

A total of nine manholes have now been covered according to AfriForum. Photo submitted.

“Concrete blocks were placed over manholes in Railway, Du Toit and Tier Streets, as well as on the corner of Greenhills Avenue and Lark Street.

The heavy covers cannot be moved easily, and there have been no blocked drains where we covered the manholes.”

According to Dewet Ungerer, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the West Rand, local authorities do not care about the safety or frustrations of the community.

“AfriForum encourages the community to become involved to create a safe environment and future for all of us.”
