More than 1 000 hygiene items donated for the poor

Rand Water Foundation is on a drive to ensure that communities within Rand Water’s boundaries of water supply are protected from this deadly virus.

The Rand Water Foundation handed out more than 1 000 hygiene items and pamphlets to the West Rand District Municipality and the Ya Sechaba Co-operative in Randfontein on Tuesday, 21 April to be distributed among residents.

The Ya Sechaba Co-operative runs and operates the Isigayo Milling Plant within the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM).

The donated items comprise 500 bars of hand-wash soap, 650 x 500ml hand sanitizers, and 5 000 Covid-19 information pamphlets.

Mohlatleho Sekoaila, general manager of the Rand Water Foundation said, “Keeping in line with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call to continuously wash our hands and use alcohol-based sanitizers to fight Covid-19 infections, the Rand Water Foundation is on a drive to ensure that communities within Rand Water’s boundaries of water supply are protected from this deadly virus.

“We witnessed what good private and public partnerships can do. We have explored partnerships with a number of corporate stakeholders to ensure that those who cannot afford to buy and provide hand-washing soap and sanitizers for themselves and their loved ones are given these to keep them safe from the virus.”

Sekoaila added that over 14 000 households are receiving indigent support of some kind from the local administration in the West Rand Metropolitan, with the average value of the fee basic services each household receives being estimated at just over R800 per month.

“It is very difficult for somebody who has just enough money to buy essential foods to also consider adding more soap and sanitizers. This was the reason we decided that through our network of customers in the form of municipalities we will ensure that those residing in our municipalities with really challenging financial circumstances will be prioritised for this hygiene package,” said Sekoaila.

In addition to the soap and sanitizers, 50 deserving families from the local administration will receive food parcels, including bags of locally produced mealie meal through a partnership with, among others, the Ya Sechaba Co-operative, the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Rand Water Foundation.

“As the Rand Water Foundation, we look forward to the day life for all South Africans and global citizens at large gets back to normal. We call upon everybody to please heed our President’s call to stay indoors in order to bring the rate of infection down,” concluded Sekoaila.
