At a testing station in Randgate, the Herald spoke to Charmaine Zwane who said it was very important for her to find out her coronavirus status.

“It is very important that I know for certain whether I am positive or not. It is not only for me, but for those who I come in contact with. By doing this, I believe I have taken responsibility to flatten the curve.”

Koos Erasmus, who was also in the queue to be screened, said he takes the outbreak very seriously.

“Everyone should. We really cannot take any chances and be ignorant. Government has given us an opportunity to be screened and tested. All we have to do is simply play our part,” Erasmus said, adding that, “The sooner you are able to isolate yourself or take extra precautionary measures not to expose others, the better,” he said.

Mariam Selepe, a staff nurse said when people came to consult, they were sanitized and their temperature was taken with a thermometer.

“We then ask them questions about where they have been, trying to determine if they have been to exposed areas. We also check them for symptoms of the virus,” Selepe said.

According to West Rand Health District spokesperson, Thuso Montwedi, Rand West City residents, like all others across Gauteng and the country, will be screened and if deemed necessary, tested as the President has advised.

“He urged that health workers should be sent out to communities to do massive screening and testing across the country,” Montwedi said.
