‘Lack of adhering to the lockdown regulations,’ says mayor

'Please respect the laws and advice from government' - mayor again reminds public regarding lockdown regulations.

Serious penalties will be meted out to those who disregard lockdown regulations, warned the town’s mayor, Brenda Mahuma.

Mahuma said people need to stay at home as the situation the country finds itself in is vile.

“We are relying on people who are mature enough to lead by example, and show others how serious the situation is,” Mahuma said.

She added that everybody needs to acknowledge that the outbreak is an enemy of the entire country.

Brenda Mahuma, Executive Mayor of Rand West City said those who fail to comply with lockdown laws will face serious consequences. Photo submitted.

“It is really terrifying and many lives are at risk. Those who do not want to adhere to the lockdown restrictions may make it worse. If people do not comply, the virus may thrive. I again urge people to stay at home. Please, respect the laws and advice from government. Stay away from places of liquor, and only go out when you collect what is necessary and go back home,” she said.

The mayor said when one drives around Mohlakeng and Bekkersdal, it is very concerning to see residents carrying on with life as normal.

“If this virus finds itself in our townships, we will not be able to manage it because many of our people are less fortunate and rely on a meagre salary. So we are urging everyone to take the advice by those within the health fraternity, to remain safe.”

She further warned businesses who continue to operate illegally that there will be consequences.

“If any business is found to be operating during the lockdown, law enforcers will get to your space and confiscate whatever it is that you are selling. You may possibly be arrested or might have to pay a fine for your violations,” Mahuma said.
