Mayor reaches out to the homeless

A total of 41 homeless people were removed from the Randfontein and Westonaria CBDs. The operation will continue until all the streets are cleared.

Brenda Mahuma, executive mayor of the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), has handed over blankets to homeless shelters in Westonaria and Zuurbekom on Thursday, 2 April.

According to Tshidiso Tlharipe, RWCLM spokesperson, the mayor’s visit comes after 41 homeless people were removed from the Randfontein and Westonaria CBDs in a joint initiative by the municipality and police on Tuesday, 31 March.

“Twenty-one homeless men were removed from the Randfontein area, while another 18 men and two women were removed from Westonaria. This operation will continue until all the streets are cleared. Traffic officers will continue to monitor these areas to make sure that things are kept under control,” Tlharipe said.

He added that the mayor has urged the Gauteng Health Department to screen all homeless persons and test those who show symptoms of coronavirus infection.

“She also pleaded with ordinary members of the community to donate clothes for the homeless people. A register has been developed and people wishing to donate items such as clothes and shoes can drop them off at the RWCLM offices,” Thlaripe added.
