Graveyard in a bad state

'"Excuses range from either being without diesel or they were waiting for the contractor, or they promised to cut the grass immediately.'

Residents are unhappy about the unkempt state of the Toekomsrus Cemetery, asking how their loved could be expected to rest in such conditions.

According DA Ward 2 councillor, Pule Ramphore, it has become difficult for residents to access the graves of their loved ones.

“The long grass also makes it impossible for people to attend funerals,” Ramphore said, adding that after being inundated with calls of residents complaining about the cemetery, he tried to intervene several times, however without any success.

“I have knocked on different office doors of the Parks Department, seeking the answers as to why the graveyard was left in such condition, but I have been given inconsistent and different answers every time.

“Excuses range from either being without diesel or they were waiting for the contractor, or they promised to cut the grass immediately,” Ramphore said.

He said despite his efforts, the cemetery still remains unattended and causes many to turn away.

“It is really shocking as it looks like people have abandoned their loved ones. We have been trying to resolve this for two years already,” Ramphore lamented.
