Today in History: In 2009 Desmond Tutu advises Obama on apologising to Iraqis

2009 – Desmond Tutu advises Obama on apologising to Iraqis
The Nobel prize-winning Archbishop Desmond Tutu has warned Barack Obama that he risks squandering the goodwill that his election has generated. He says that Mr. Obama should apologize for the invasion of Iraq. He has also prayed that Mr. Obama will be tough on African dictators. Tutu added that the U.K’s standing in the world has suffered because of its cooperation with the U.S. in the “war on terror.”

1938 – Hitler Speech
This was a day of extreme tension and anxiety in Berlin, Germany. On this day, Hitler gave a much-anticipated speech, which was delivered to the third Reich (Nazi Germany Government).
This was the beginning of the start of the expansion of the Nazi regime, which later resulted in the occurrence of World War II (for Americans, 1939-1945). The Third Reich was originally formed some time in 1933.
Adolph Hitler was the Chancellor of this regime, which was very totalitarian and fascist in nature. He strived to fulfill the message that “his” race (The Germans) were superior, and he lead campaigns to eliminated various racial, religious, and political groups such as the following: Jews, Africans, Romanis (a.k.a. Romas, Gypsies), Lutherans, and anti-communists.

19 Feb, 2001 – England Foot and Mouth
A Suspected case of foot and mouth disease is detected at an Essex abbatoir, the first case in the UK for 20 years.
The case is later confirmed and four million animals in the UK were slaughtered. The disease cost the farming industry between £800m and £2.4bn and destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of farmers. The UK was finaly declared foot-and-mouth free in January 2002
2010 – Tiger Woods makes public apology

Tiger Woods the world number one golfer talks publicly for the first time since the scandal surrounding his private life erupted last year. During his press meeting he said “I was unfaithful, I had affairs and I cheated. What I did was unacceptable,”

2011 – Somali Pirates Hijack Yacht

Somali pirates took four Americans hostage after hijacking a yacht traveling from India to Oman. Since 2002, the yacht’s owners Jean and Scott Adam had been sailing around the globe in the boat with two crew members.
