But what happens to those who would like one but do not have the space or a garden for one of these miracle plants? Well, you are in luck, because you actually get a Spekboom bonsai, so even with limited space, you can help improve the quality of air we breathe.

A few facts about the Spekboom according to Kathy Steyn, owner of Bonsai Magic in Loumarina:

• They release more oxygen than most plants

• They can be eaten, but there are plants that taste better

• Elephants supposedly eat them

• There are two types: The one is the Spekboom tree, and the other one is more shrub-like

• They are known to purify the air

• They are proudly South African plants, and can stand sun and freezing cold weather

• Spekboom can live for approximately 200 years
