Residents of Toekomsrus are fearing for their lives because an old, abandoned building in Oranjerivier Street, believed to have been a post office many years ago, has become a den for criminals.
According to Pule Ramphore, a councillor in the area, the building had fallen into the hands of vandals. Residents of the area have called for the building to be demolished as people are being robbed there daily.
“A female victim managed to escape from the site. The place is really a thorn in the side of the community; it poses such a big danger. We are pleading with the Parks Department to clean it up.
“Many learners and other residents are being targeted as the building is located near a bus stop,” Ramphore said.
“The vagrants who have taken over the dilapidated building hear people walking past in the morning and then pounce on them.
“‘Many have come forward saying they were robbed of their valuables. We are pleading with the municipality to intervene before more people are harmed and even lives are lost,” Ramphore pleaded.
