‘Drugs, alcohol abuse will destroy your futures’ – police to learners

Learners at a local school were warned by Randfontein Police about the effects of substance and alcohol abuse.

The Randfontein Police’s Social Crime Prevention Unit visited Hartzstraat Primary School in Toekomsrus on Monday, 3 February to warn learners about the effects of substance and alcohol abuse.

Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson said the police partnered with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) to carry out the campaign.

During the presentation, we demonstrated to the learners how the use of drugs could send them into a life of crime. We told them if they are using, they may turn into addicts who rely on crime to feed their cravings,” Hendricks said.

During the visit, learners were advised to come forward if they had any information about drug peddling, especially at school.

“There have been complaints that drug dealers are always trying to lure learners through the school fences during break – an issue we are determined to eradicate completely.

“We want learners to focus on education and avoid getting into trouble with the law. We believe that many of them have dreams and aspirations of becoming better citizens in the future,” Hendricks concluded.
