Residents of the Randgate informal settlement, also referred to as the Master informal settlement, are being subjected to unhygienic conditions because sewage has been flooding their yards since December.
According to Suzan Mamorena Mokhwane, who lives there with her three children, the problem started when a drain clogged up.
“The issue is that our shacks are located on a slope, so it is easy for the sewage to run into our homes,” Mokhuwe said.
She added that the community had made numerous efforts in the past month to report the matter to the municipality, but one only official was sent out to the site.
“She came here and only took pictures, but that did not help because we never heard from them again,” Mokhuwe said.
Mokhwane concluded by saying that the community is worried about the conditions caused by the sewage spill. They fear that their children are being exposed to all sorts of germs.
