Parts of town without power: Load-shedding and substation explosions

Residents of Randgate, Randpoort and Homelake are affected by the latest alleged catastrophe.

If Eskom’s announcement of load-shedding yesterday is not enough, residents in parts of Randfontein now also have to deal with a substation that allegedly exploded.

The areas affected at this stage seem to be Randgate, Randpoort and Homelake.

According to councillor Cina Erasmus, she was notified that the power issue of more than 24 hours was due to an explosion that occurred at the Market Substation, and that the whole substation would be switched off in order to inspect the damage.

Cina added that the downtime is unknown at this stage.

“The power in Homelake has been off since yesterday at 4pm. It came back on and went off again at about 8pm. It has now been off for more than 12 hours. I would like to know why other areas are on and we are left without power,” said Lydia Moolman, adding that the most frustrating part is that when one tries to phone the municipality to find out about the issue, the emergency and even after-hours numbers ring and then the line goes dead.

Simone Cassidy-Francis added that the power had indeed been off since around 4pm yesterday, but that the power in the Greenhills area was on, according to people she knows who live there.

“I just want to know when my power will come on,” said Simone.
