JUST IN: Fire breaks out at Greenhills Cemetery

UPDATE: 'Fire allegedly started with an open flame, probably someone who threw a cigarette bud on the floor' - Randfontein Fire and Rescue Services say.

A fire broke out at the Greenhills Cemetery in Randfontein on Tuesday night, 29 October.

According to Herald journalist, Michelle Roodt, the fire department as well as emergency services were on scene.

“There is smoke everywhere and trees ruined,” she said describing the scene before 10pm.

By 11pm, MJ Laubscher, Randfontein Fire and Rescue Services station officer said the fire has been brought under control.

“The fire is under control and was put out.”

He added the fire allegedly started with an open flame, probably someone who threw a cigarette bud on the floor.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire may have started with grass catching fire which then spread to rubbish lying around.

“We received a call at about 9.10pm and arrived on scene approximately 10 minutes later. It then took us until at least 10.30pm to extinguish the fire.”
