Murder suspect in court

Colonel Tinus Swart issued a warning to liquor traders.

A 32-year-old suspect appeared in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 21 October, on charges of murder.

According to a media statement from the office of the Westonaria Police station commander, Colonel Tinus Swart, the suspect allegedly stabbed and killed a 35-year-old victim during a tavern fight.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said the incident happened on Saturday, 19 October 2019, at approximately 2.50am.

“The victim was allegedly enjoying himself at a local tavern when he was stabbed by someone he knew,” she said. The victim was rushed to the Bekkersdal Emergency Services where he succumbed to his injuries on arrival. The police were summoned and the preliminary investigation conducted by detective Sergeant Shiwe Mkone led to the arrest of the suspect at another tavern shortly after the incident.

Colonel Swart commended the member for swiftly responding to this incident, ensuring that the suspected perpetrator was brought to book.

Swart issued a warning to liquor traders to adhere to the Liquor Act 59 of 2003 as this particular incident happened outside operating hours, which may point to none-compliance that constitutes a fine.

He urged the public to act responsibly and avoid carrying weapons during their visit to liquor outlets.

“We will be monitoring the outlets closely as we approach the festive season. Those who do not comply will be dealt with accordingly.”
