Women encouraged to be the light in the darkness

Women's Conference reveals that there is a light at the end of the tunnel despite unemployment, abuse and the dire economic situation.

Bundu Inn came alive on Women’s Day as women dressed in black and yellow attended a Women’s Conference hosted by Mimi Phiri.

Mimi, the organiser of the event, said the theme of the Women’s Conference was ‘You are the light’. According to her, this was to remind everyone about the struggle and challenges women face currently, including unemployment, abuse and the dire economic situation.

She said although this has affected the country, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

“It takes determination for women to take charge in their lives. Women need to take charge and let their voice be heard.

“The yellow we are wearing represents light. As women we need to be the light in the darkness. It is time to reclaim our power as women and not let circumstances determine our lives,“ said Mimi.

Adding on to what Mimi said, Pastor Mamis Tau from Oaks Of Righteousness Church called on women to honour God, irrespective of their circumstances.

Dr Nhlanhla Mtshali, another guest speaker who spoke largely about female wellness, said that 80 per cent of chronic diseases are due to bad lifestyles and can be prevented.

Dr Nhlanhla Mtshali, another guest speaker, gave a word of advice on health and wellness.

“Certain habits lead to diseases. Sugar can be dangerous to your health. Why not eat lots of fibre and exercise more,” she said.

Dr Mtshali added that a strict diet is not good for everyone and it is therefore necessary to consult with a doctor and specialist before going on one. She also emphasised that women must go for Pap smears to help curb cervical cancer and called for stricter health measures at mines across the West Rand in the fight against TB.
