A man was stoned to death while another has been admitted to hospital after they allegedly held a couple at gunpoint with the aim of robbing them.
According to the Bekkersdal Police, at about 10.45pm, the couple managed to overpower the robbers and alerted the community who then allegedly stoned the two before calling the police. One suspect was declared dead on the scene.
“The firearm that was allegedly used was recovered and preliminary investigations revealed that it was stolen from a security officer in another business robbery at one of the local mines last month,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

She added that a case of murder and attempted robbery has since been opened and the investigation is continuing.
“The surviving suspect is currently under police guard and will be charged with attempted robbery and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.”
Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, condemned the violent behaviour displayed by the community and issued a stern warning against those who take the law into their own hands, saying they will be brought to book.
“We need strong community leaders to condemn violence and take the concerns of the community seriously, because we need to ensure our children are in environments that demonstrate lawful behaviour rather than resorting to violence,” Swart said.
