Child robbed by ‘fake’ soccer club representative

Child, 15, robbed of his cellphone at gunpoint by a man offering him the chance to take part in a football tournament.

A teen of just 15 years old was robbed after being offered a spot in a football team to participate in a tournament in the Bekkersdal area.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said they are investigating a case of robbery and that the incident took place at about 3.45pm on Friday, 16 August.

She said the victim was walking along the street when he was approached by an unknown man who offered him the chance to take part in a football tournament.

“He further alleged that the man suggested they walk to his house to collect an application form, but along Hallet Street the perpetrator produced a firearm and demanded the young victim’s cellphone.

“He handed over the phone but managed to escape. The victim reported the matter to his uncle and a case was opened. The perpetrator is still unknown and an investigation is continuing.”

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander urged the community to assist in educating kids about the dangers of talking to strangers and advised those interested in playing soccer to sign up at legitimate soccer academies.
