Two people, one a baby, killed in weekend crash

Eight-month-old baby dies in Sunday morning head-on collision on N12.

Two people, one an eight-month-old baby, lost their lives in a head-on collision between two vehicles on the N12 in Fochville on the far West Rand on Sunday morning, 4 August.

Three other people were also injured.

Ineke van Huyssteen, ER24 spokesperson said, “When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 4.30am, they found two vehicles that seemed to have collided head-on. Upon further assessment, they found two patients in the one vehicle who had sustained fatal injuries. One of them was an 8-month-old baby. Paramedics declared both of them dead at the scene.

“Two others were found outside the vehicle. Both had sustained moderate injuries. A man was trapped in the second vehicle. Fochville and Potchefstroom’s Fire Departments had to extricate the man using the Jaws of Life. He was found to have sustained serious injuries. ER24 and another medical service on scene transported the patients to hospital for further medical care.”

She added that the exact circumstances surrounding the incident were not known to the paramedics, but police were on the scene for further investigations.
