Mohlakeng’s Thembi in line for top sports award

National football star, Thembi Kgatlhana of Mohlakeng, is in line for more football trophies.

Local female footballing sensation, Thembi Kgatlhana, is in line to win big at two major sports award ceremonies.

Despite Banyana Banyana not doing too well at the recent Women’s Soccer World Cup in France, Thembi has earned a lot of kudos.

Regardless of the disappointing outcome of the match, the golden girl from Mohadi Street, Mohlakeng gave South Africans something to cheer for at the World Cup, with a stunning goal she scored against Spain.

She has now been nominated for several sporting awards at the G-Sports Awards, the Gauteng Sports Awards and the South African Sports Awards.

Earlier this year she was clearly Africa’s best female soccer star, and was rewarded for her success at the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) Awards in Senegal. She won both the Women’s Player of the Year and Goal of the Year awards, which she added to her trophy cabinet. This cabinet already contains the silver medal Banyana Banyana obtained against Nigeria in the final of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations.

“We call on the public to vote for Thembi at both the provincial and national award ceremonies to come,” said Thabo Moatshe, coordinator of the Thembi Kgatlane Women’s Soccer Tournament which is to be held in December later this year.

“This tournament is going to be one of the biggest in Rand West City. Let us not just vote for Thembi but support her tournament which aims to nurture talent and those wanting to follow in her footsteps.”
