Councillor to sue municipality after injury

Local councillor planning to file a civil suit against the Rand West City Local Municipality following leg injury.

Ellik de Lange, a councillor in Greenhills, is planning to file a civil suit against the Rand West City Local Municipality following the leg injury he sustained during a site inspection last week.

De Lange, who has since been using a crutch for support on his left side, said “On Monday 22 July, I was busy on the corner of Darter and Convent Streets in Greenhills and found a leaking water pipe,” he said.

He added while standing on a concrete slab, he stepped backwards, tripped and in the process injured his leg, from the calf to the ankle.

De Lange added that the following day he went to the doctor, who inspected his injuries and confirmed that his muscles were torn.

At the time of his injury, Ellik de Lange said he was inspecting the uncovered manhole.

“As far as I’m concerned, the municipality has a responsibility to erect warning sings or have the ditch filled up, but at the moment, there is nothing to warn people passing by. It is very unsafe here, especially seeing that people are walking nearby.”

De Lange said the situation could become really dangerous, especially if someone fell into the uncovered manhole near the concrete slab.

“It could be very dangerous for those walking near it at night,” De Lange added.
