What’s happening – all in the name of Madiba!

South Africans will be celebrating the birthday of Nelson Mandela and this is what will be happening in town …

On Thursday, 18 July, South Africans will be celebrating the birthday of Nelson Mandela with the rest of the world.

Here’s what will be happening locally … Some of the celebrations will even continue until 20 July.

Thursday, 18 July:

• Painting and renovation at Itumeleng Special School from 8am to 11am by the Rand West City Local Municipality’s (RWCLM) disability coordinator, office manager and staff from the Mayor’s office

• Cleaning and visit at Agakitso for the mentally challenged from 11.30am to 12.30pm by the RWCLM staff including that of the Mayor’s office

• Painting at the Toekomsrus Protective Workshop for the disabled elderly from 1pm to 4pm by RWCLM staff including that of the Mayor’s office

• Planned clean-up at the Rand West SPCA and the Life Esidimeni Recovery Centre in a collaborative effort that includes various stakeholders, including Vine Leaf Networks, Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Recreation and Culture, SPCA, Life Esidimeni Recovery Centre, the Herald and other local organisations. In addition, the gravel road leading to the SPCA offices will be graded, shrubs and bushes will be pruned at both the organisations and the refuse removed, while the Recovery Centre will be painted.

The objectives of the programme above are to:

• Celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela and promote the spirit of collaborative governance

• Create awareness of the great work being done by both the centres

• Rally support from communities, corporate sector and other government departments to assist the centres to achieve their goals

• Promote an active, healthy lifestyle

• Address the stigma attached to rehabilitated substance abusers

• Assist with integrating rehabilitated youth into society

Friday, 19 July:

• RWCLM staff including that of the Mayor’s office to visit Bekkersdal, specifically the Methodist Church to issue deeds to beneficiaries from 9am

Saturday, 20 July:

• Sports Day to be held at the Life Recovery Centre from 9am by RWCLM staff including that of the Mayor’s office

• Lunch for the elderly at Bekkersdal’s Old Age Home from noon by staff of the RWCLM Mayor’s office
