Over 30 arrested in Bekkersdal crime sweep

A total of 33 arrests were made during a rural safety operation in Bekkersdal for crimes involving illegal mining, possession of dagga, the selling of expired products and more.

An Integrated Rural Safety Operation in Bekkersdal lead to 33 arrests early on Wednesday morning, 22 May.

The operation was conducted by police from the West Rand District, Community Police Forum members (CPF) and other law enforcement agencies.

Police and CPF members joined hands for the Rural Safety Operation in Bekkersdal.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the operation started at 8am.

A total of 33 arrests were made for various crimes including undocumented persons, illegal mining, and possession of dagga, while fines were issues for non-compliance in respect of illegal trading and selling of expired products.

“All the arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon,” Lefakane said.

The operation sought to bring law and order to the area.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, praised all involved in the operation.

“We will ensure that we conduct this kind of operations more often, until our communities are at peace,” Swart said.
