Police are concerned about the increased number of delivery vehicles (vans) being hijacked on the West Rand, specifically in the Krugersdorp and Randfontein areas.
Constable Lucky Matome, the West Rand District Police spokesperson, said that since the beginning of April, the number of delivery vehicles targeted in Krugersdorp, Kagiso, Tarlton and Mohlakeng has become a great concern.
Although most of these vans were recovered, we call upon members of the community to report any suspicious activities, particularly those involving these vehicles.”
Constable Matome added that the police have noted that in most cases, the suspects are not after the vehicles, but are usually after the cargo they are carrying.

“Drivers of such vehicles are urged to be aware of their surroundings, more especially when they are in areas that they are not familiar with. Furthermore, drivers should not leave their delivery vehicles idling when asking for directions,” Matome said.
Matome further advised that they should rather go to the nearest police station and ask for assistance and inform the police about their delivery routes.
If there’s a need for a police escort, the police will provide such assistance,” Matome said.
Matome said police in the West Rand Cluster, under the leadership of Major General Fred Kekana, are committed to providing safety and security to the community of the West Rand and its visitors by bringing down the levels of serious crimes.
“This can only be realised through the cooperation of the general public,” Major General Kekana emphasised.
