Your country needs you to stand up and vote

Every vote counts and is essential for a well-functioning democracy.

As part of our vibrant and open democracy, South Africans will have an opportunity to exercise their democratic right to vote on Wednesday, 8 May.

Voting will take place between 7am and 9pm on this day, which has been declared a public holiday to enable all persons to vote. Government appeals to employers to allow workers time off so they can vote.

As the country celebrates 25 years of freedom, we encourage all registered voters to make their mark for democracy. Active citizens are central to the success of a well-functioning democracy and we are confident that the nation’s sixth democratic elections will add to our legacy of regular and peaceful elections.

Together we can build a better South Africa for all and ensure that we deepen the gains we have made over the past 25 years of democracy.

These elections will allow voters to cast their ballot for the party of their choice at both national and provincial level. If you vote outside of your province, you will only receive the national ballot.

Voters can verify their registration status and obtain information on their voting district by visiting www.elections.org.za, calling the IEC helpline on 0800 11 8000, downloading the IEC South Africa app, or SMSing their ID numbers to 32810 (R1/SMS).

The Department of Home Affairs will extend operational hours at all offices from 6 to 8 May. Offices will be open from 7am to 9pm on Election Day. Persons who wish to apply for Temporary Identity Certificates, which are available on the same day to allow them to vote, are advised to visit their nearest Home Affairs office.

They are available at a cost of R70. Two passport-size photos and your ID number must accompany your application. Voters can call Home Affairs toll free on 0800 6011 90 for more information.

Every vote counts and is essential for a well-functioning democracy. South Africans are encouraged to come out in their numbers and renew our democracy.
