Nedbank takes 10km win after local star opts for 5km race

Absence of one of R'fontein's top local athletes gives Nedbank a win in the 10km event at Diabetes Race in Greenhills.

It was Joel Mone of Nedbank who cruised to victory in the 10km race at the Run Against Diabetes Awareness Campaign held at the Greenhills Stadium on Saturday, 7 April.

Hot favourite, local running star Kabelo Melamu, of Murray & Roberts, opted to run the 5km race instead as preparation for an international outing in Morocco.

The Phalula twins, Lebo Phalula and her twin Lebogang Luthuli, took the two top spots.

Pitso Molemane of Kaya FM, who was a coordinator of the event, was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of nine. He said the Run Against Diabetes Awareness Campaign achieved its purpose as it brought people together to run pre-diabetes risk tests. Not only was the community educated about the deadly disease but took the tests while others took part in the 10km and 5km race.

The women’s 10km event saw all Boxer Athletics Club athletes on the podium with another local top athlete, Cornelia Joubert, finishing in third place while fellow teammates, known as the Phalula twins, Lebo Phalula and her twin Lebogang Luthuli, took the two top spots.

Others took part in the 10km and 5km race.

Other participants in the event included Mzi Khumalo, the Executive Mayor of the Rand West City Local Municipality; the council Speaker, Violet Mnqina; the MMC for Sport, Art, Culture and Recreation, Nontombi Molathlegi; and Mummy Moumakwe and Dudu Mbulula – who took on the 5km fun walk.
