Empty room turns into a crèche within days

The Sijabulile Rethabile Educare Centre in Mohlakeng received a makeover which took just days, thanks to Total MakeOver and our very own Mrs Africa, Reinette Herbst.

According to Henrietta Mhilungu, the owner and principal of the school, they had limited resources, no visual stimulation, no gross-motor equipment, no children’s books and no proper toys.

The Total MakeOver team then did what they do best and got the public and sponsors on board.

“Just in Time Baby Sanctuary gave all their extra beds to the school, so all 12 children could have something to sleep on. AEB Sticker Enterprise sponsored educational posters to put on the walls and Stephan Hendricks from Pallet Smart Furniture sponsored furniture,” Reinette said.

They also gave the exterior of the school a facelift. Janine Pretorius and Odette Glossop sponsored paint and Jannie van Loggerenberg, Janine and Eugene Ferreira sponsored painters. Jakes Mbele, a local artist, helped with the designs of the murals.

Michelle Lottering took it upon herself to fix the fence and Marco Hoffman, a Mr Randfontien Jnr 2019 finalist, planted some nice flowers in the garden.

All of the helpers and sponsors are local and it’s their way of paying it forward to the community. Nwabisa Mbuma, a local teacher, looked after the children while their new classroom was under construction.

The Total MakeOver team is already busy with their second makeover of a school on the West Rand and they hope they can get even more people on board next time.
