Police clamp down on illegal taverns

Police stamped their authority on illegal liquor trading in the Bekkersdal area recently.

Eight taverns in the Bekkersdal area were visited and issued with fines for non-compliance with the Liquor Act 59 of 2003.

This happened when the Bekkersdal Police conducted a crime-prevention campaign across the Bekkersdal area including Simunye, Zuurbekom and Waterworks on Friday, 15 February.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the campaign was held between 4pm and 10pm that day.

“The operation was held to enforce compliance by liquor outlets and addressed assault cases that were emanating from those outlets,” Lefakane said.

“One suspect was arrested for driving under the influence and a suspected stolen bicycle belonging to a learner was recovered. Police along with CPF members also distributed pamphlets relating to domestic violence, sexual offences, human trafficking, substance abuse and general safety.

“The community was very impressed with the exercise and they commended the collective efforts,” Lefakane said.
