UPDATE: Security company condemns CBD strike

A security company has condemned the latest strike action by its employees outside the municipal offices earlier on Friday.

Mjayeli Security said the strike action by its workers was illegal and is condemned by the company.

Security officers of not only the local municipality but those working elsewhere in Randfontein downed tools and congregated outside the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) offices early on Friday morning, 8 February. Close to 100 security officers expressed their dissatisfaction and said they have several grievances with management.

Neo Sehume, the Chief Operations Officer (COO), admitted that the company had an issue with paying workers, but said everyone has now been paid.

They are angry because the money does not yet reflect on their cellphones,” Sehume said.

He said the company did not support the strike by its employees,”Because it is what we classify as an illegal strike. We do not associate ourselves with illegal strikes and we have never sent anyone to promote any agenda which was not within the scope of operation.”

Sehume also dismissed some of the allegations that some of the employees have not been paid for six months.

“Logically speaking, no one would continue working for any company without being paid for such a long period. In this company, if there is an issue, we believe that we need to sit around the table, and try to find a solution,” Sehume added.

One of the employees, Tshepang Molefe, said it is unfair that he and his colleagues are risking their lives working for a company that does not even care about its employees.

“It is unfair how they treat us. I once got mugged while on duty, and a colleague was attacked and severely injured. It is bad enough that they are paying us peanuts, now they take their time paying us,” an angry Molefe said.
