Clinic easy target for criminals

Someone must be held accountable for the break-ins at PJ Maree Clinic – DA.

Members of the DA from all over Gauteng met on Thursday, 7 February in front of the PJ Maree Clinic in Toekomsrus. The clinic has recently become a major target for criminals.

The purpose of the gathering was to sign and seek further support from the community for a petition drawn up by Balderic Dryer, the DA branch chairperson in Ward 8. Dryer said he arranged this petition because they want someone to be held accountable for the numerous break-ins and vandalism at the local clinic. It is alleged that the security company monitoring the clinic has not been paid, and has withdrawn its services.

Members of the DA from all over Gauteng met in front of the PJ Maree Clinic in Toekomsrus on Thursday, 7 February.

“The community of Toekomsrus is tired of the regular break-ins. We want to know why the security hasn’t been paid, because if they were at the clinic, these crimes would never have happened.”

He also said that these break-ins have a negative impact on the whole community because the clinic has to stay closed for a few days after the incident.

“Last weekend, the washbasins were broken and taps were stolen. The clinic can’t open its doors if it doesn’t have any water,” he said.

DA members from all over Gauteng took to the streets of Toekomsrus to get signatures for their petition. The DA Women’s Network also showed their support by coming all the way to Toekomsrus to take part. A few local DA members cleaned the sidewalk, streets and gutters before the meeting.

The Herald visited the clinic with DA councillor Donovan Cloete on Thursday, 17 January for further investigation into the conditions at the clinic as well as the issue of the unpaid security company, but wasn’t allowed to take pictures, and staff refused to comment.
