#MunicipalMonday: ‘A street hazardous to us and our kids’

Residents in a street in Toekomsrus say a blocked storm-water drain is not only an unpleasant sight, it also poses a very big health hazard, especially with children around the area.

Residents of Toekomsrus have identified Gamtoosrivier Street as yet another hazard to all.

Speaking to the Herald for this week’s #MunicipalMonday, Thabo Motsoane, who has been a Toekomsrus resident for 20 years, said in the past three years a blocked storm-water drain near his property has been nuisance to his entire family.

“I have made efforts to resolve this matter in the past few years, but nothing worked,” Motsoane said.

He added that the blocked drain is not only an unpleasant sight for the locals, it’s also a very big health hazard, especially for the children in the area. He added that situations like these are why residents grow tired of their unheeded pleas to the municipality and resort to protests.

Motsoane said the last time he requested assistance from the municipality, he was told that the special equipment needed to repair the drain was broken.

“That is all they told us, and to this day we are still waiting for them,” he said.

Motsoane said what is even more upsetting for the residents is that they are paying money for services that they do not even get in return.

Meanwhile, Ricardo Dial, whose property is located near a dumping site, said that ever since it started his yard has been infested with rodents attracted by the filthy conditions.

“Lately, I have even come across snakes, because they are after the rats that frequent the site,” Diale said.

He said the dumping started as soon a tarred road was resurfaced, when all the rubble was discarded there

“So now everyone is disposing of their rubbish here,” Diale added.
