#CaxtonCares — Urgent call for donations towards flamingo chicks rescue

These chicks will be sent to various rehabilitation facilities, but they still need to feed and keep them warm.

The Owl Rescue Centre based in Hartbeespoort has stepped in as a facilitator for the current flamingo chicks rescue mission taking place in Kimberly.

Due to the severe drought, a colony of flamingos at Kamfersdam in Kimberley faced imminent death. Flamingos breeds annually, and as a result of the dam starting to dry up, hundreds of young chicks are in dire need of rescue because they are being abandoned by their parents.

Local celebrity and security specialist Mike Bolhuis, who is on the forefront of this rescue mission, spoke to Jacaranda FM’s Martin Bester about the 900 chicks that were collected from the drought-stricken Kamfersdam this past weekend.

“It came to my attention, so I got my people together and we are making a plan,” Mike told Martin.

Mike is currently rehabilitating hundreds of these chicks at his smallholding in Kimberley.

“What went wrong?” Martin Bester asked.

“It is definitely because of human neglect. The sewerage system is not working at all and that is one of the reasons why the dam does not have sufficient water. You see this daily and nobody was helping. We got many people to step up, and I thank them for that. Even the MEC stepped up,” Bolhuis added.

How can you help?

The Owl Rescue Centre will help to distribute a couple of hundred of these chicks to various rehabilitation facilities, but they still need to feed and keep these chicks warm, and this is where the public comes in.

They need:

• baby blankets

• Nestum baby food

• chicken eggs

• frozen sardines

• frozen shrimp

• monetary donations towards petrol
