#MunicipalMonday: Big trench a cause for concern

VIDEO: In this week’s #Municipal Monday, the Herald speaks to a councillor and residents about a big trench in Toekies which has been an issue since 2016.

A trench in Hartsrivier Street, Toekomsrus that stretches for approximately 30 metres is a cause for concern.

Councillor Pule Ramphore said since he took office in 2016, the trench has been a thorn in the side of many residents, yet nothing is forthcoming from the municipality.

“At the time this trench was not so big, but we were still concerned,” Ramphore said.

He added that when he first reported the matter, he was told that the issue had already been budget for. However, Ramphore said, the trench started to get worse as it was never attended to by anyone.

“During the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) they even said that the entire street would be rehabilitated, but 2016 was a long time ago.

“While waiting for that budget, they could have done something like patching it up but nothing was done,” Ramphore added.

He went on to say that even after inviting the municipality to the site and sending them pictures, the problem is still being ignored.

The trench on Hartz Rivier Street is said to stretch for 30 metres.

“To show that nothing was ever done, you can see the weeds growing in it. You won’t believe me, every morning I report this problem,” Ramphore said.

Among some of the risks and dangers it poses to the public, Ramphore said when it rains the trench is filled with running water that may lead to damage to motorists’ vehicles.
