Man without electricity, but not his neighbours

A resident has been without electricity since lightning struck his house on 8 December yet his neighbours have power.

Hans Schreudler’s home in Hillside was struck by a very strong bolt of lightning on Saturday, 8 December, leaving him in total darkness. However, all his neighbours have electricity.

So far, Hans said the power outage has cost him R500, mostly in food that has gone bad and the money he spent on fuel in his attempts to resolve the problem.

Hans tried 19 times to get Eskom to help, but was told that the technicians that were sent will no longer be available after going to the wrong address.

“I think this is unfair because I am the one who is losing a lot of money, without them being willing to take the responsibility.”

Hans said he is not only worried about the costs – he’s more concerned by the fact that the 25 children who are in his care are also affected by his predicament.

“We do not know how long we’re going to have to endure this situation.”

He said the fact that the problem affected a pole makes it worse, because it is not something that he can fix himself.

“If the problem was in the power box, we would be able see it. We cannot do anything by ourselves. The public also needs to know that if they have a similar problem, they should be prepared to pay the cost incurred to restore the power,” Hans added.
