Walking for health on World Aids Day

The Methodist Church in Randfontein held a Family Health Walk and Run last weekend.

The fundraiser took place at 116 Main Reef Road in Randfontein on Saturday, 1 December.

Micheal Sebopa, coordinator of the event, held on World Aids Day, said that their aim was to promote a healthy lifestyle and help to reduce the impact of the HIV/Aids pandemic in the community. Pitso Moahlodi, who also helped to coordinate the event said that it was a big success, with locals coming out in large numbers to participate.

“It was the first Health Fun Walk and Run of many to come. We are really trying to promote a healthy lifestyle while also changing the stigma about HIV/Aids. We had about 250 entries in the 5 km race and every cent is appreciated by the church. We hope that we can raise even more funds through events like these so that we can reach out and help the community,” he said.

1 December was also Reverend Simon Prins’ 60th birthday. Photo: Jaco-Mari Futcher.

“We appreciate all the help and donations we received from Tiger Brands, Uncle Harry’s Roadhouse, Randfontein Herald, Comp Print, West Rand Retired Teachers Association and Mohlakeng Simunye Elderly Centre, and even those who were willing but not able to help. Without the community, we wouldn’t be able to organise events like these.”

1 December was also Reverend Simon Prins’ 60th birthday. The church held a surprise party for him after the main event, and he was thrilled with his birthday cake, which was shaped like a Springbok jersey.
