#ThrowbackThursday – 5 December 1986

The Herald goes back, way back, to 5 December 1986 for this week’s #ThrowbackThursday.

It’s Throwback Thursday and the Herald went back in time to 5 December 1986, when one of the front page stories was headlined Carols by Candlelight – Dec 8 – Riebeeck Lake.

This said to be annual event was once again to be held at Riebeeck Lake, and organisers aimed at reaching the 1 000 attendance mark.

That was the fourth consecutive year that the event was held in Randfontein. The first year 300 people attended, the second year 450 people turned up and in 1985 the 800 mark was exceeded.

Councillor Roy Harris at the time requested all citizens to support the event.

Citizens were also asked not to bring their own candles as the Rotary Club sold candles for 50 cents each. The income would go towards the Patient Support Group in Randfontein.
