Liza wins big at CGA awards

Local runner Liza Kellerman was named Junior Female Athlete of the Year at the CGA awards.

Liza Kellerman is on top of the running world, having once again emerged as the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Junior Female Athlete of the Year.

She first achieved this feat in 2015, during a grand gala and awards ceremony held at the Southern Sun OR Tambo International Airport Hotel in Kempton Park on Saturday, 17 November. Liza was also a nominee in 2016.

Another winner on the night.

The Randfontein running champion received this well-deserved accolade after her participation in and performance at the international World Junior Championships.

“I am very happy to have made the podium for the second time – in fact, it was completely unexpected. From here, my focus is on the World Student Games in Italy and the World Senior Championships, with the assistance of my coach, Hein Mare.”

She added that she attributes her success to discipline and hard work.

Guests at the grand gala and awards ceremony held at the Southern Sun O.R. Tambo International Airport Hotel in Kempton Park.

“One has to be disciplined, set goals, reach them and strive to improve each time you get out on the track”. She draws her inspiration from fellow South African World and Olympic gold medallists Wade van Niekerk and Caster Semenya, as well as from British international athlete Lynsey Sharp.

Another local athlete to have grabbed an award on the night was Itumelang Sesiko from Mohlakeng, who was recognised with a Certificate of Achievement for taking part in an international event.

“This is just the beginning for Itumeleng. We have huge plans for doing a lot of long distance running and speed training, to get the pace perfect,” said his coach, Motlatsi Sesing. Itumeleng was also the first Junior and fourth finisher at the recent Old Mutual Soweto Marathon, hot on the heels of his teammate, Kabelo Melamu.
