Avante’s top learners rewarded

Avante Primary School learners were honoured for their excellent performance in academics, sport and culture during a prestigious award ceremony recently.

Avante Primary School learners were honoured for their excellent performance in academics, sport and culture during a prestigious award ceremony held on Wednesday, 7 November.

Orefile Mpadisang, Omphile Maupela and Zinhle Sello, all Grade 7 learners, were the top achievers of the 2018 school year.

Grade 4, 5 and 6 learners were also given certificates of recognition for their outstanding performances in a wide variety of subjects, while other learners were commended for good behaviour and cleanliness.

Helena van Zyl, coordinator of the ceremony, applauded the learners who have outdone themselves by saying they have made the school proud.

“As a teacher you can actually see how learners have developed from the beginning of the year up to the end of the year. At our school, we believe in the holistic development of learners and create many different opportunities regarding the fields of academics, sport and culture,” Helena said.

She added although not all learners can achieve 100 per cent, those who are second best can be motivated with merit achievement certificates.

“For example, a learner who achieved an average of between 75 and 79 per cent for a subject or overall average also received a certificate. Honorary colours are then given to learners participating at the provincial or national level and those maintaining an academic average of 85 per cent for two years consecutively,” Helena said.
