Unhappy employees disrupt executive meeting over salaries

Local municipal workers locked in some big-name executives during a council meeting demanding their salaries to be paid on Wednesday.

Unhappy employees of the West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) on Wednesday locked in some big-name executives during a council meeting demanding their salaries to be paid.

During the council meeting, the WRDM employees started singing and dancing, disrupting the meeting. They were allegedly unhappy because neither their salaries nor their third party payments were made on time.

According to a municipal officer who did not wish to be named, the employees demanded answers before anyone was allowed to leave.

“The meeting included employees and councilors and the aim was to reach a resolution that suits everyone. Some employees haven’t received their salaries yet and their third-party payments like bonds and medical aid is already a few months behind which creates a long-term problem,” the municipal officer said.

It is further alleged, however, that the employees and mayor did come to an agreement by 9pm.

“They agreed that their salaries be paid tomorrow (Thursday, 1 November). The mayor said that they have the funds but that it was paid into the wrong account but they can access it now. This was a small win in a big war.”

The disgruntled employees blamed the municipality’s investment in the controversial VBS Mutual Bank for the money problems but Clement Mohlala, communications officer at the WRDM denied these allegations.
