It has been revealed that one of the sewage pumps at the Toekomsrus sewage plant has not been working for months. It is suspected by the ward councillors to be the root of the many sewage blockages and spillages in the area.
During a visit to the plant by the Herald on Monday, 22 October, it was discovered that the power cables to Pump 2 had been cut and stolen.
“The main thing that has brought here is the problem that we have within the community, which is sewage blockage. When we report to the municipality on sewer issues, our requests are ignored,” councillor Isaac Ramphore said.
Ramphore said that many people in the area are stuck with living with sewage spillages in their yards for months because of the lack of response from the municipality. He also said the issue of the pump has not been acknowledged by the municipality either.
Councillor Gerald Samson, who was also part of the tour, said the major problem is crime.
“Vandals have also cut the gate’s lock, and I think they know there is only one guard, who is not armed, which is a safety issue for him,” Samson said. He went on to say that despite the financial challenges currently facing the municipality, it still has the responsibility to make sure that it attends to the problem urgently, as people will soon be facing a major health hazard.
