You may be out late celebrating the New Year. Welcome 2019 in safely with these tips.

New Year’s Eve is expected to bring hundreds of people to public celebrations and private parties all over town.

Alcohol-related injuries and crime typically spike during the festive season – that’s why you should be prepared to party responsibly.

Here are a few tips for making sure you, your friends and family have a safe, pleasant New Year’s Eve so that you can welcome 2019 worry-free:

• The buddy-system: Stay close to your friends as they will have your back in an unpleasant situation. They can keep you calm and steer you away from aggressive situations.

• Read the situation: When people are in the party mood, things can unfortunately get out of control quickly. If you are in a situation where you feel uncomfortable, not in control or vulnerable, you should get out of the situation as soon as you can.

• Drink responsibly: Pace yourself between drinks to avoid getting too drunk too fast and always keep an eye on your drink. Don’t take drinks from strangers and don’t leave your drink unattended.

• Don’t drive under the influence: New Year’s Eve is one of the most common days of the year for drunk-driving accidents. When on the road, drive with extreme caution. It can also be a good idea to have a designated driver. Make sure this person knows his or her role in advance so he/ she doesn’t drink.
