The Herald spoke to local professional runner, Hannie Doogan, who said that one can enjoy many benefits as a runner, among them not only shedding winter weight, but immensely improving one’s life as a whole.

Hannie said shedding weight should not be a once-off effort; weight management needs to be continuous.

“It is all about a healthy lifestyle – not only in summer,” Hannie said.

She said to effectively lose weight, one needs to combine one’s diet with exercise.

“Even if you run regularly, you have to increase your pace or run longer distances so that you can constantly challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone because your body gets used to everything you do,” she said.

Hannie said it is very important to drink a lot of water, which will help with detoxifying the body.

She said the most common misconception people have about living healthily is that one needs to deprive oneself of everything you like. “If you feel that you have done well, or have pushed yourself a little, have that piece of chocolate, otherwise you might overindulge when you deprive yourself for too long.

“The key here is that people should not eat more than the required potions during meals,” Hannie said.

She said among the benefits of running is that it can give you a good supply of energy in the morning. “People think if you run in the morning you are going to be exhausted during the day, but you actually have more energy to get you through the day,” she said.

Hannie said running has also helped her to feel good about life in general, and she wants to help others to feel the same.
