Man found dead at dumpsite

Randfontein Police are investigating after a man was found dead allegedly shot.

Yet another body was found in the Randfontein dumping site area at about 5.30am on 12 September.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, the man had been shot in the thigh.

“A burglary was committed by a group of approximately 40 illegal miners at the Sheltam Company near the Cooke 1 mine in Randfontein. The group took a number of tools and equipment during this raid,” Ernst said.

The security officer managed to activate an alarm and a security response team responded. When the team arrived on the scene, the suspects (illegal miners) opened fire on the security team. The team retaliated and the suspects fled.

“This incident happened shortly before the deceased, according to witnesses, came running into the dumping site. An investigation is under way to determine if the two incidents are linked. The deceased collapsed and died shortly after he arrived at the dumping site.”

The identity of the 24-year-old man is known and his brother was on the scene where he died. The investigating officer, Constable Mokgomotsi Mokhaba, would appreciate any information that might assist in the investigation. He can be contacted on 011 278 8100.
