Get to know a ‘Teiner’ #81 – Umar Rafiq

The 81st person in the Herald's Get to know a Randfonteiner project introduces himself.

Meet our Teiner of the week, Umar Rafiq, 32, who was born in Pakistan and has made Randfontein his home.

Umar, who has travelled to many parts of the world, said it took a lot from him to understand the cultural differences between his home country and South Africa.

“I had to come out of my shell to find out what Randfontein was all about,” Umar said.

He said by getting to know people, and finding out how they operate, have made him feel welcome in this country, because now he understands the local culture.

Umar said he is proud of himself as not many are able to adapt. “They just end up going back home because they feel out of place. Not me, I always mingle with everyone.”

Umar said he appreciates each and every person in Randfontein who has given him a chance to explore and get to know the town.

“Most importantly, thank you for making me feel safe in this area. I am truly happy, because it feels like Randfontein is my home away from home,” Umar said.
