A suspected robber was shot and killed and firearms recovered following a cash in transit robbery in Florida on the afternoon of 7 September.

The robbery took place at the Shell Service station on the corner of Ontdekkers and Gordon Roads yesterday aftenoon, when the security guard, who was collecting money at the service station, was confronted by two armed men.

They managed to disarm him and took two money boxes. Before fleeing from the scene, they shot the tyre of the CIT vehicle. According to reports, at least four suspects fled in a light delivery vehicle.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the Johannesbug Metropolitan Police Department, said that the vehicle was spotted by JMPD officers a while later, driving at a high speed in Dobsonville.

“JMPD officers were joined by police members, who gave chase.

The suspects opened fire on the officers, which was returned, and in the process one suspect was hit and killed, while another one was arrested. An AK-47 assault rifle, three pistols as well as the two money boxes were recovered,” Minnaar said.

The other suspects escaped, but investigations to track them are underway.

The National Commissioner of Police, General Khehla John Sitole, prased both the Police and JMPD officers for their vigilance and bravery and said, “The positive response by our police officers nationally to these violent crimes since the implementation of the National Interventions, must be appllauded.”
