Randfontein Welding School boosts the economy

The school also offers scholarships for students who cannot afford the fees.

Not much is known about the Randfontein Welding School, but for 15 years, the school has been equipping youths with welding skills, especially those who come from less fortunate backgrounds.

Founded by Happy Kroet, who also worked in the industry, the school said it is proud to boost the economy by placing learners in companies for job opportunities.

Charmaine Kroet, co-owner of the school, said the school is not only teaching welding skills, but it is also instilling principles and standards that the school prides itself on.

“If the students complete their courses, they get a certificate from us. If they do the whole year or six months of a learnership, they get an accreditation certificate from the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (Merseta),” she said.

Charmaine said two of the most important things that are instilled in the students are integrity and hard work.

“People think welding is simple, but it’s not, it is something that requires hard work, and in order to qualify to be a proper a welder, you have to have a good sense of focus.”

She said people should also be aware that there are different types of welding that may require different types of the skills, in order for one to be an all-rounder.

She said after completing their lessons, students are sent to companies to do in-field work, “Or we simply get them placed in companies where they can do their field training,” Charmaine added.

Asked about the qualities one needs to be a good welder, Charmaine said, “You have to be focused and adamant that this is the kind of job that you want to do, because when you see the work that goes into it, you will realise that a lot of things go into it. It’s not just welding that is involved.

“For example, if you are working on a big construction site and you make one small mistake, the job is sub-standard.”
