Weekend crime blitz: 50 arrested

A large number of people were searched and some were arrested in a massive crime prevention operation run by the Westonaria Police last Friday.

A total of 50 people were arrested for various crimes in a joint crime prevention operation in Westonaria on Friday,

According to Constable Lucky Matome, West Rand Cluster Police spokesperson, 137 police officers, five traffic officers and 16 Community Policing Forum members were involved in the operation.

He said their goal was to create a safe and secure environment for all people in South Africa.

“The operation aligned itself with this vision, as 50 suspects were nabbed for various offences, ranging from possession of suspected stolen goods to assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and other minor offences, such as undocumented foreign nationals,” Matome said.

A revolver with 13 rounds of ammunition was confiscated during the operation. The abandoned firearm and ammunition were found in an open field near Venterspos. Another 14 9mm rounds were also found abandoned in the same area.

“This is a clear indication that criminals are feeling the presence of the law,” he said.

Various roadblocks were conducted on some of the problematic roads, with a total of over 600 persons being stopped and searched.

“The arrested persons are expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon, while all undocumented persons will be dealt with accordingly by the Department of Home Affairs and the Immigration Office,” Matome concluded.
