Record number of entries for Name the Chick competition

We've already had a record number of entries, but you best make sure you don't miss out on your chance to enter.

The Name the Chick competition has only been running for a week, and we have already received more than 140 entries – a record that begs to be broken.

The Northsider launched the second Name the Chick competition in association with the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR) on Thursday, 16 August, with the aim of naming the newest addition to the Black Eagle family.

The resident pair in the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden at the moment, Makatsa and Thulane, hatched their chick on 16 June.

The pair came together last year after Thulane’s previous mate, Emoyeni, mysteriously disappeared and Makatsa swooped in to take her place. Their first mating season yielded Ayanda, meaning ‘newest addition to the family’. Their second mating season faced the threat of postponement when their nest was washed away in March. But, the resilient pair hastily rebuilt and just in time for mating season had a new nest where the first egg was laid in May. The egg hatched on 16 June, and now at 68 days old, the eaglet needs a name.
